If you're feeling worried about how you’ll feed your child during the COVID-19 crisis, rest-assured that many amazing, kind and generous folks all over the country are working hard to figure out ways to help. For those living in the NYC area, here's a list of places that have already stepped up and started offering free prepared meals and food for kids. School closures and job loss will mean millions of missed meals many of which will happen right in our own community.
Food Bank New York City COVID-19: Readiness Response
If you're in Harlem or upper Manhattan, the Community Kitchen and Food Pantry (252 West 116th Street New York, NY 10026) has to-go meals available Monday – Friday and take-home pantry bags available Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. For those in other areas of NYC, click the link above to access a map of Food Bank pantries across the five boroughs.
DNYC Department of Education - School Meals
Grab and Go breakfast and lunch are available at the entrance of all DOE school buildings. Any student can pick up breakfast and lunch from any building.* NYC Dept of Ed will post locations for food pick up starting March 23 as soon as possible. The Food Education Fund or Food Hub NYC - COVID-19
This site hosts a list of restaurants offering food to families and students in need during COVID-19. If you have an elderly or immunocompromised neighbor or loved one you also can also access a link to Invisible Hands, a COVID-19 safe service that will delivery your groceries for free.
Do you receive SNAP?
SNAP benefits can be used for online grocery purchases. Current participating retailers include Amazon, Walmart and ShopRite. Amazon is available statewide; Walmart and ShopRite participate in specific zip codes. All SNAP application and re-certification interviews may be done by phone. An in-person interview is only required if the applicant or re-certifying recipient requests an in-person interview.
